By 1976, the family-owned company had introduced their first innovative product — a fiberglass metic mat 3-tab shingle — transforming industry standards.

From establishing the nation’s first 20-year shingle warranty to creating metric fiberglass to algae-blocking shingles to the patented shingle nailing zone, the manufacturing products have worked to “define roofing excellence.”

Malarkey's excellence is achieved around one guiding principle — employees are the most valuable resource. In 2016, the company celebrated their 60th anniversary, paying tribute to their team of 500 employees who provide sustainable roofing solutions for residential and commercial customers.

Honoring a Legacy

Like most family businesses, Malarkey Roofing Products measures their success against a longstanding legacy. BCI Group helps the company meet that legacy by brokering the company’s employee benefits, COBRA services and retirement planning. BCI Group promotes overall well being, helping create a culture that supports employee physical and mental wellness, as well as financial wellness.

Approximately 10 Malarkey family members work within the company. CEO Jim Fagan carries the torch for the family and has been instrumental in their success. In a recent employee survey, an overwhelming percentage of employees were happy with the cost and quality of not only their health plan, but retirement plan options and employer contributions.

Crossing State Lines

To keep the legacy alive, BCI Group and Malarkey Roofing Products offer a compensation package that extends beyond the company’s corporate headquarters in Portland, Oregon. In 2003, the company opened a new production facility in South Gate, California, and expanded again in 2011 beyond the West Coast, opening a manufacturing plant in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

“As the company grows, we’ve had to navigate through different insurance carriers,” said Caddell. “The goal is to offer competitive benefits for employees in each market, to find the right plan in each location which will continue to retain and draw in talent.”

The company continues to increase their reach — with sales representatives as far away as Florida — and plans to expand further into eastern markets. Despite celebrating 60 years in business, Hunt said the company is still growing, and still perfecting the guiding principles created by their founder.

“In a lot of ways, we are still a new company,” Hunt said. “We have tenured employees who have worked here for more than 47 years and those just joining us. BCI Group has helped ease this transition in the workforce. They are very accessible and supportive in any direction we need help.”
